Multitasking, part 2

Sometimes your kid cries until you put him in his sling. And sometimes you need a beer. Oddly enough (or not so oddly), sometimes these things happen simultaneously. That’s when you get pictures like this.

A cautionary tale

Let me tell you a story. It’s 3 am and you have a six-week-old baby who will not sleep. He has been up since 9 pm and has eaten and had his diaper changed (many times within this time period) but still fusses and cries without ceasing. He calms down when you hold him, but you can’t fall asleep holding him. He’s a trickster too — several times he’s appeared to be passed out, but when you put him down he wakes up and cries.

You’ve gone through the same process the last few nights and therefore are running on about 4 hours of sleep per night. Finally, you crack. The baby is screaming and nothing you do calms him. The wailing baby wakes up your husband, who finds you sobbing along with the baby in the living room. He takes the baby, who, of course, calms down immediately, and you go get some sleep, leaving your husband with the kid and wondering why in God’s name he agreed when you wanted to go off birth control.

What’s the moral of this story? Well, when any new mom leaves the hospital the nurses tell her to sleep when the baby sleeps. Usually said mom nods her head but, when the baby is asleep at home, finds herself cleaning the kitchen or doing laundry. Well, for the newly pregnant friends I have out there, PLEASE listen when I say FIGHT THE URGE. You may last a while on four hours of sleep per night. Maybe as much as six weeks. But when you crack, it’ll be bad. Take it from me.

Our very talented friend Michele took some great pictures of Ryan a few weeks ago, as well as some of us as a family. Check them out here, and check out her web site, www.mphotodesign.com, if you need some photography done. She is awesome!

We gave Ryan his first bath a while ago, but these pics are from the first bath where he didn’t scream his head off the entire time. Now he just looks…unamused during his baths. But he’s not screaming, so I’m ok with it. 🙂

This weekend Mason’s family came to visit. This means that they could watch Ryan while we went out to dinner by ourselves for the first time since he was born. We went to Uchi, a local sushi/Japanese restaurant. Kind of fancy-dancy, but it was in celebration of our birthdays and anniversary.

Anyway, this place was AMAZING. We had:

maguro sashimi and goat cheese with cracked pepper, fuji apple and pumpkin seed oil
brie tempura ringo: lightly fried brie with apple chutney and sweet potato chips
salmon sashimi
pitchfork roll: wagyu beef and fresh avocado with tonburi land caviar and leek crisps
flash-seared foie grasÙ radicchioÙ mintÙ limeÙ shishito pepperÙ juniper

And for dessert:
peanut butter semi freddo with apple-miso sorbet & ringo crisps
cracked black pepper sorbet with fresh strawberries

We also tried cold sake, which was not so much wine-like as liquor-like. Good, but I still prefer wine.

I know you are thinking, black pepper sorbet? Oh yes. It was delicious. We decided it might be the best meal we’ve ever had. Oh, and I know there’s a lot of controversy out there about foie gras (duck liver), but having tried it we decided that we are ok with killing ducks for their liver. Because it is so tasty. Like butter. Mmmm.
